Modular Plantrooms (MPR) was engaged by a leading construction contractor to support the expansion of the theatre building at Barnsley Hospital. The project was delivered in two key phases:
Construction of the theatre extension
Design and installation of a rooftop plant room to house essential mechanical services
We engineered a bespoke beam and column structure to form the primary framework of the new building extension, tailored specifically to meet the main contractor's requirements.
The plant room was installed on the existing rooftop infrastructure, requiring careful coordination with the existing structural framework and services. To accommodate this, we developed a new support grillage to securely house the plant room.
For the plant room, we developed a portal frame structure featuring open mesh flooring and external cladding, balancing durability with accessibility for maintenance. The plant room was prefabricated off-site in modular components and delivered in "piece small" format for efficient assembly on-site.
In addition, we coordinated the lifting and placement of the Air Handling Units (AHUs) into the plant room during the on-site construction phase, streamlining the integration of key mechanical services.
A complete turnkey structural solution for the hospital
Off-site construction enabled faster delivery and minimised on-site disruption
By managing the AHU installation, MPR saved both time and cost for the contractor
